1) A benefit sometimes offered to employees, especially new employees, in which they are given an option to buy shares in the company for which they work at a favourable fixed price or at a stated discount to the market price. An approved share option scheme is one that meets certain conditions imposed by the HM Revenue and Customs. Under such a scheme there are no income tax charges on the grant or exercise of the option or on the growth in value of the shares; the only charge will be to capital gains tax when the shares are sold.
